What’s in a name?

After reading this article, I am wondering about a few things. I don’t have children and therefore have no experience choosing a name for a being. I didn’t even name my cat! She was an adult, answered by her old name and I found no reason to change it. While I really feel like you must be high or something to choose a name like “Fish and Chips” (see the article) for someone’s name, how DO you select a fitting name, something a person will be called for a good deal of one’s life?? I don’t know if my grandparents on my father’s side just drew a blank after the 14th child, but my dad didn’t have a name until he named himself at age 18! In their defense, he was born premature in the 1940s, delivered by a midwife (not to offend any in this important profession) and was never taken to a hospital. He weighted less than 2 pounds, and at the time, it was nearly guaranteed that a child that small would not survive. So they skipped the naming process (i mean he was going to die anyway, why waste a perfectly good name???) and low and behold, the little dude survived… nameless. They had all sorts of nicknames for him, but the most salient one was “Tad,” later adapted to “Ted” because that sounds better. They called him Tad though because he was little like a tadpole.. Got to give it to them for being original. I have to wonder if not having a name had a lasting impact on him. Until he was 18 years old, his birth certificate just said (enter grandfather’s name)’s son! I guess he can be happy that they didn’t name him Tad or Tadpole, since that’s what it was short for!

Legend has it that my mom (before she named me Constant Rain, of course) almost named me after a light fixture! She thought it was pretty, the name- that is (or maybe the fixture? I’m not sure). Fortunately someone talked her into Constant Rain, and I didn’t have to get teased all of the days of my life, or at least while I was in elementary through high school. :)

Do you have any interesting name stories that you’d like to share?

NAME FAIL.

that’s horrible. thank god that judge interceded.

my mom wanted to name me Cinnamon because she knew that i would have reddish brown hair. luckily my aunts talked her out of it.

That’s cute… (lol!! FAIL!) I don’t think it’s bad for a nickname though… Not to give you any unnecessary memories with that statement.

Don’t even get ME started. Its not been easy growing up with my name. I guess it will fit me better when I’m around 70 something.

That’s the most interesting story! He didn’t have a name until he was an adult. I’ve never heard of such a thing!

Naming kids is hard. Let me tell you. But now that my kids have been around for a while, I couldn’t imagine them named anything different.

I would suggest though, if you’re going to have a baby, have a few names picked out, even after a baby is just born, you can really tell what name would fit the baby best. It’s the oddest feeling to know your baby fits a certain name. Then you spend the next year trying to get used to calling the baby that name! It’s nuts.

I’ve heard of parents calling their kid Skyy. Like the vodka…

UGH! JB81, I was real annoyed because one of my friends was going to name her child Skylar if she had a girl. I think that name is not cute. (If your name is Skylar, or that’s your favorite friend’s name, that does not change my opinion. LOL it’s not personal at all!). BTW, I love your little pic! You are melting me with all these cute pics!!!

Autumn, that’s so enlightening. I would be so worried that it wouldn’t fit, but it’s nice to know that you feel right when it does. :)

lol Bluez. I feel your pain. Now that I’ve seen your pic and “known” you for a while, i dont think that fits well. However, I don’t think it’s bad like Chandelier as a middle name!! AH!!

I’m with Bluez! My middle name sucks. and No, I’m NOT typing it in here! ::shudders::

I should have changed my name to my middle name specially since I moved so many times. I wonder why I didn’t go that…Marie is much better than MY name! What was I thinking???

go that = do that.

The American meaning of my name is corny, right up there with Hope, Sunshine, and Joy! However, in the native tongue it has more meaning and is less flower child. I figure when I have kids I’ll prepare a list of names that I’ll have ready in the hospital room (or the birthing-pool room lol), stare at my child long and hard, and pick a name. Now, if my baby starts acting like that other than whichI named her/him…I may just have to change a name or add a new middle name. Think my future hubby will be cool with this?

lol I don’t know, sessence.. You might just have to run it by him just in case! LOL Thanks for posting. :) By the way, there’s nothing corny about those things!
